As we talk with the Muslims in our midst, our job is to plant a seed, to pray, to love, and to trust God to bring souls to life in Him (see 1 Corinthians 3:6-7). Since the Quran discourages Muslims from asking questions about Islam's teachings (Quran 5:101), we can plant a seed in the heart of a Muslim by giving them opportunities to think critically. BACKGROUND:
While the doctrine of the Trinity is certainly mysterious and impossible to fully comprehend with our finite minds, God has revealed in His Word that He is indeed one God in three persons. God has given us this revelation to accept and enjoy, but most Muslims are misinformed about this wondrous Christian doctrine because Islam claims that Christians revere three deities: God, Mary, and Jesus (Quran 5:17, 75, 116). This conversation is an opportunity to clarify Biblical Truth, building on the prior discussions of this series.
THE QUESTION:
"What do you believe about the Trinity?"
THE CHRISTIAN RESPONSE:
A central belief for Christians is the Trinity, but it is most certainly not a pagan doctrine by which we worship three different gods, like Allah, Jesus, and Mary! God has clearly revealed Himself in His Word as one in essence and three in person: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit.
Each person of the Trinity is fully divine and yet distinct; they relate to each other personally. Scripture says, "The Lord your God, the Lord is one" (Deut. 6:1), and yet God's Word reveals the personal relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: "No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known," and "the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things" (John 1:18, 14:26).
While the Trinity is difficult to understand, it does make sense. Consider the question: When did God start to love? God has always loved; there has never been a time when this was not an attribute of God. But whom did He love before anything was made? God practiced love with Himself—within the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You see, God is love (1 John 4:8, 16). He is not just loving, but the origin of love, for He is both lover and beloved within Himself. He does not need an object for His love nor someone to love Him outside Himself.
We, however, need this true, life-changing love. And wonder of wonders, God offers us the opportunity to experience His love by sending us Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, to bring us into relationship with God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Would you like to know this love?
