American Flag
As we commemorate 250 years, let this be not merely a celebration of history but an urgent call to return to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Two hundred fifty years ago, fifty-six courageous men signed not merely a declaration of independence from earthly tyranny but—far more profoundly—a declaration of dependence upon Almighty God. With unwavering conviction, they wrote, “[W]ith a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our fortunes and our sacred Honor.” These were not idle words. They were words forged in the fear of the Lord and in full awareness that success would demand sacrifice and failure would cost them everything.

As we mark this historic anniversary of the United States, we must not romanticize history nor forget the solid foundation upon which this nation was built. For our founders understood a Truth that today’s America is in grave danger of neglecting: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, . . .” (Psalm 33:12). That blessing is not automatic—it is contingent upon humility, repentance, and obedience to God’s Word.

Tragically, our nation has strayed from the Biblical foundations that led to its flourishing. Today, morality is scorned, sin is celebrated, and Truth is increasingly rejected. History reminds us that great civilizations decline when they abandon righteousness—moving from faith to apathy, and from apathy back to bondage.

Therefore, as we commemorate 250 years, let this be not merely a celebration of history but an urgent call to return to the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is the hope of any nation. For no political system, no human institution, can save. Indeed, “there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). In this pivotal movement, let us recover that crucial dependence on our Lord and Savior. Let us serve as a blessing to our nation. And let us pray for hearts to be awakened to the hope of Christ. We need not give up. The Lord is with us.

BLESSING A WAYWARD NATION

In the days of the prophet Jeremiah, God permitted a ruthless nation to discipline His people because they refused to return to Him. Again and again, He warned them that compromise brings consequences—and judgment came. Yet even in exile, God commanded His people: “[S]eek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper” (Jeremiah 29:7). In other words, even under judgment, God’s people were called to be a blessing—faithful, obedient, and steadfast in their witness.

Christian, we too are strangers in this world. While we await our eternal home, we are commanded—not advised—to pray for our nation, to seek God’s mercy, and to stand unashamedly for His Truth. We do not wring our hands in despair; we fall on our knees in repentance. We speak the Truth in love without compromise, calling a lost generation to salvation in Jesus Christ. And we cry out for a genuine awakening by the Holy Spirit, that the lost may be saved and the wandering may return to the living God.

PRAYING FOR AN AWAKENING

Our God delights to answer the prayers of His faithful people. He has done it before. On September 23, 1857, a layman from the Old Dutch North Church in Manhattan invited others to a simple lunchtime prayer meeting for the nation. Only six came. But the next week, there were twenty. Then forty. Soon they started meeting daily. By early 1858, there were 5,000 prayer gatherings filling churches, halls, and buildings across the city.

What began with one man’s burden before God became a mighty awakening. Ten thousand people a week were coming to Christ in New York City alone. Church bells rang at 8:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m., calling people to prayer. The movement—known today as the Businessman’s Revival—spread up the Hudson River and down the Mohawk River, across the Appalachian Mountains and into the West. Within one year, more than one million souls came to Christ. The sweep of the Spirit crossed the Atlantic, touching Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, parts of England, and even South India. Its impact endured for decades. Lives were eternally transformed.

This is why we pray for the peace of our city and nation. We pray urgently, diligently, and without ceasing. For only God can transform hearts, heal divisions, and set captives free. Only God can bring true awakening—here and to the ends of the earth. Therefore, let’s pray for America.
